Handy, Useful Old-time Kitchen Gadget
I was very glad to see someone still selling this product! A _necessity_ for gas stove users and cooks who make gravies and cream soups. This item reduces and spreads the flame of a standard gas stove or a camp stove to make it possible to simmer something thick very low - without the flame blowing out! If you have trouble scorching creamy sauces or soups on any stove, including electric or wood, this is the solution! An absolute must-have! I bought two.
It is exactly as I remember the one I had many years ago that I inherited from my grandmother.
I did not give 5 stars because, just like my old one, there is not enough insulating material to keep the wooden handle from smoldering. A longer metal ferrule or a twisted wire style of handle would solve this.
Flame tame
The item is as expected....it should perform ok if one does not turn the flame or burner high enough to burn the wooden handle....a common complaint....also, the handle being wood will surely shrink from the heat and would have to be re-attached......but it is cheap and should work long enough to make it worthwhile....saw one yesterday at retail for $3.99 with a folding plastic covered handle.....looked cheaper than this one and I would rather have a scortched wooden handle than melted plastic.....
The handles burn
I stopped using these after the handles, one by one, burned, got charred, and eventually fell off. Great idea, poor design.
